I was listening to a recent episode and heard you mention that you were running a bit low on recommendations for your True Crime Nerdtimes, isn’t it funny that true crime fans can’t STFU about true crime until you ask them to compose a slightly intelligent email? What a lazy, pajama wearing, chip covered, Bill Curtis loving crew we all are.
I have a recommendation, it is a book I read months ago but continues to stick with me today. It’s called The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride by Daniel James Brown.
The title is misleading, it isn’t about a singular “bride”, it is the full and thoroughly researched story of the Donner Party. Oh shit, does Australia know about the Donner Party? Group of people, westward expansion…got caught in some mountains…ate each other? You must, right? If I know who Ivan Milat is, AU true crime fans must know a bit about the Donner Party.
Anyway, this book is about the entire experience, it’s amazingly researched and thorough but the best part is that it reads like a novel. I had to keep pausing while I was reading it to remind myself that the events actually took place.
Additionally, for people even living in the US, the real story is not the one we know, it’s actually worse than what we’ve been taught. It is a story of impossible struggle, survival at all costs, perseverance and even (seriously, like it couldn’t get any worse) a god damned murderer in the midst. I can’t reco this book enough, it’s a perfect read.
I host Re-Solved Mysteries & True Crime Snacktime and am a colossal fan of your podcast. Keep up the fantastic work <3
