Although the cases that are discussed in this book will be well-known to many Bloody Murder listeners, it is still fascinating. Former FBI profiler John Douglas and his long-time coauthor Mark Olshaker examine five cases: Jack the Ripper, Lizzie Borden, the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, the Zodiac killer, and JonBenet Ramsay, and include helpful images and maps. Douglas provides a brief but thorough summary of the events in each case, examines the historic theories surrounding them, and provides new insight via a profiler’s analysis. On the whole, the book is riveting and hard to put down, and I enjoy the authors’ straight-forward, no bullshit writing style. Some readers might object that Douglas could be too close to the Ramsay case to provide a completely objective analysis, since he was hired by the family as a consultant, but he does provide logical arguments to back up his analyses and conclusions in the case.
This was one of the first true-crime books I read, and I’ve reread it several times and loaned it to friends, and I’ve never had anyone say they didn’t like it. The last person I loaned it to took a while to read it because her significant other started reading it and wouldn’t give it back. It’s a great introduction to all of these cases for those who are not familiar with them while also providing enough new material to hold the interest of true crime die-hards who’ve read about the cases before. The Cases that Haunt Us remains a unique look at historic and more recent true crime mysteries and is one of my absolute favorites.
